Herman Miller Aeron specs: B size, Carbon, Graphite, and Fully Loaded

The Aeron ships in a combinatorial number of configurations: three sizes, three frame colors, three mesh colors, two lumbar options, three tilt options, and four armrest types. Most people don't need to understand every combination — but if you're buying on the secondary market, knowing what spec you have in front of you matters. Here's the full reference.

Frame colors

Frame color refers to the structural frame — the parts that aren't mesh. The three official colors are:

  • Graphite — matte black. The most common configuration, about 60% of production. Looks good in any office setting.
  • Carbon — slightly warmer than Graphite, with a subtle grey undertone. About 25% of production. A hair more premium-looking.
  • Mineral — light grey-beige. About 15% of production. Softer aesthetic for lighter rooms. Rarer on the secondary market.

Frame color is purely cosmetic. No ergonomic difference. Graphite is the workhorse and the easiest to find used.

Mesh colors (Pellicle)

The woven mesh back and seat come in colors that generally match the frame:

  • Graphite mesh — matte black, matches Graphite frame.
  • Carbon mesh — slightly warmer grey, matches Carbon frame.
  • Mineral mesh — light grey-beige, matches Mineral frame.
  • Tuxedo — black frame with a contrasting silver/grey mesh. A premium configuration; less common.

Lumbar: standard vs PostureFit SL

  • Standard lumbar — a single adjustable pad that you position vertically on the lower back.
  • PostureFit SL — two pads, upper and lower, that support the sacrum and lumbar spine separately. This is the one you want if you have lower-back pain.

On the Remastered Aeron (2016+), PostureFit SL is the default lumbar on most configurations. Pre-2016 'Classic' Aerons often have simpler lumbar pads.

Armrests

  • Fixed — no adjustability. Rare in modern production but common on older Classic Aerons.
  • Height-adjustable — up/down only. The entry-level option in modern Remastered production.
  • Fully-adjustable (Fully Loaded) — height, width, pivot (forward/back angle), and depth. Four-axis adjustment.
  • Leather-wrapped arm pads — a premium option on top of any of the above. Cosmetic, slight comfort upgrade.

Tilt options

  • Standard tilt — recline with tilt-limiter (set the maximum recline angle) and tilt-tension (how much resistance).
  • Forward tilt — adds a forward-leaning mode, useful for drawing tablets, some sit-stand usage.
  • Stool configuration — a rare 'stool' variant with a higher cylinder for counter-height workstations.

What 'Fully Loaded' means

Fully Loaded is Herman Miller's term for an Aeron with all the premium options: fully-adjustable armrests, forward tilt, PostureFit SL lumbar, and adjustable seat-pan depth. When a listing says 'Fully Loaded' or tags 'FL', it's the top spec. Adds ~$150 over a base Remastered configuration.

How to read a Kontor SKU

Our SKUs encode the key spec in the name. Example: HM-AER-B-GR-001.

  • HM — Herman Miller
  • AER — Aeron model
  • B — Size B
  • GR — Graphite frame
  • 001 — our internal unit number

What to confirm before buying a used unit

  1. Size — stamped on the frame (A / B / C) and on the label.
  2. Year of manufacture — on the label. Anything 2016+ is Remastered; earlier is Classic.
  3. Lumbar type — standard vs PostureFit SL. Look at the back for two pads (SL) vs one (standard).
  4. Armrest adjustability — how many axes of movement.
  5. Tilt behavior — does it lock smoothly at any angle?

FAQ

Common questions.

What's the difference between Aeron Classic and Aeron Remastered?
The Remastered (2016+) has updated lumbar (PostureFit SL standard on most configurations), cleaner aesthetic, and Zeeland-factory updates. The Classic (pre-2016) is mechanically similar but has older-style lumbar pads and a slightly different frame look. Both are authentic Aerons; Remastered is the current design.
What's the weight capacity of each Aeron size?
Size A — 300 lbs. Size B — 350 lbs. Size C — 350 lbs. Exceeding capacity voids any applicable warranty and stresses the tilt mechanism.
Does the Aeron come in white?
Not in standard production. Limited-edition variants (Stanley Kubrick Tribute, the NY edition) have existed but are very rare. The 'closest to white' is the Mineral frame/mesh combination, which is a light grey-beige.
How do I know if my Aeron is Fully Loaded?
Fully Loaded has all of: 4-way adjustable arms (height, width, pivot, depth), PostureFit SL lumbar (two pads), forward tilt, and adjustable seat-pan depth. If the armrests only go up and down, it's not Fully Loaded.
What's the life expectancy of an Aeron in daily use?
Herman Miller warranties the chair for 12 years of 24/7 use. In practice, Aerons frequently outlast that — 20-year-old units in daily office use are common. The gas cylinder and casters are the two components most likely to need replacement over time (both are $30–$60 parts).
